Audi A4 ADAS Calibration

The Audi A4 is our most-requested Audi model for ADAS calibration – and the most common reason is bumper or grille work that shifts the front radar behind the four-ring badge. Whether you have a B8 with optional Adaptive Cruise Assist or a B9 running the full Pre Sense suite through the zFAS module, professional recalibration restores every system to manufacturer specification.

ADAS Systems on Your Audi A4

The A4's ADAS package depends on the generation:

B8 / B8.5 (2015–2019):

  • Audi Pre Sense City – standard automatic emergency braking at urban speeds
  • Adaptive Cruise Assist – optional on S line and higher trims, radar behind front grille badge
  • Active Lane Assist – optional, uses windscreen-mounted camera behind rearview mirror

B9 / B9.5 (2020+):

  • Full Pre Sense suite – Pre Sense Front + Pre Sense City standard on all trims
  • Adaptive Cruise Assist – standard, integrated with Active Lane Assist
  • Side Assist – blind spot monitoring via rear radar sensors in the rear bumper quarters
  • zFAS module (J1121) – on Vorsprung and Black Edition trims, this centralised controller manages all ADAS sensors. A single component fault can cascade across every system it controls.

The A4 shares its radar and camera architecture with the Audi A5 – both use the same grille-mounted radar and windscreen camera positions. The front radar sits behind the Audi badge on the grille – it's the first component affected when a bumper is removed, replaced, or refitted.

Why Your Audi A4 Might Need ADAS Calibration

After Bumper or Grille Repair

The A4's radar module is integrated into the front grille assembly. Any repair that removes the bumper – even if the radar itself isn't touched – can shift its alignment by fractions of a degree. That's enough to trigger Adaptive Cruise Assist faults and Pre Sense dashboard warnings.

After Windscreen Replacement

If your A4 has Active Lane Assist (B8.5 onwards), replacing the windscreen dislodges the camera from its calibrated position. On B9 models, both the camera and radar feed into the zFAS controller, so a windscreen swap can trigger multiple system faults simultaneously.

The car tends to slow down as if detecting that there is an obstruction even though there isn't." – Audi owner

When radar calibration drifts, Pre Sense can trigger phantom braking – applying the brakes for obstacles that don't exist. If your A4 brakes unexpectedly on motorways, radar recalibration resolves it in most cases.

Audi A4 ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Audi A4

The most common trigger is bumper removal or replacement – even routine bodywork shifts the radar behind the grille badge. Windscreen replacement, collision repair, and Cat S/N restorations also require calibration. On B9 models, replacing the zFAS module means recalibrating every connected system. See our Audi A6 page for a detailed zFAS replacement scenario.
